How to draw a dog’s nose

I absolutely love drawing noses! My favorite part is getting that scaly/wet look perfected.

I was so nervous when I first started drawing them, but after the first year of practice I felt more confident. The trick is to pay attention to the highlights so let’s get started.

I ALWAYS use black to draw the nostrils. They’re always dark with no depth so why add other colors?

Be sure to draw the shapes to what you see, sometimes they are not even and that’s okay.

Some noses have a lot of grey while others have many colors. This example is pretty basic with just simple warm and cool greys. Apply light layers drawing in circular motions. This will create a more even blending for the nose.

Dark sepia in the faber castell collection is one of my favorite pencils! You can use this pencil for just about and details to create depth since black can look very flat.

Apply this color in the lowlights using the same circular motions.

To create an even more realistic nose, use cool tones right around the highlights. This will give that nice shiny look. Since this nose didn’t have a lot of detail, if your example does then use a black or super dark color with a sharp point to draw in the little crevices by drawing odd shapes here and there. Once that is done, use a lighter color to blend over a little bit of that so that it doesn’t stand out too much.
